For Lil Wayne’s thirteenth, studio album my team and I were tasked to create an album cover and package that honored the traditional second line jazz funerals of his native New Orleans. Jazz funerals are viewed as celebrations of life rather than times of mourning so I wanted to reflect that spirit in this project. I developed a bespoke custom ambigram logo that reads vertically and upside down as a tribute to that notion. The main logo is gloss varnish and embossed for dimension over matte rainbow paper stock. The blackletter typeface breathes life into the death certificate inspired typography.

The rare triple gatefold jacket format creates a triptych three panel image of a civil rights era jazz funeral, alluding to classical medival religious paintings from art history. The tracklist design is embossed into a contemporary “second line” grave dancing photograph revealing an almost ghostly invisible effect for the album packaging. The specialty rainbow paper stock was selected so the weathered front and back covers will wear to reveal a stark white under layer, calling back to the album’s themes of life, death, and rebirth.
